Who is Deborah Roth?
First, a little personal background… I grew up in Corning, NY, the second of four children and the only girl, which had its’ definite advantages! Mount Holyoke College was my next home (where I majored in Psychology and Education), and from there I moved to New York City where I’ve been happily ensconced since 1977. I’ve been dancing with the same extraordinary man for over 35 years and we have two fabulous sons, one daughter-in-law, and a beautiful granddaughter — finally some girls in the family! I’m a former marathon runner (Lyme’s disease ended that in the late 80′s), long-distance cyclist, and roller-blader, but I hung up my skates 15 years ago and have been passionate about my daily vinyasa yoga practice ever since.
In my “spare” time, I’m a pretty voracious reader and tend my own little plot of land in a local community garden. I’ve sung in Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center with my terrific, small women’s chorus, the SoHarmoniums, and I’m also a chaplain with the Disaster Chaplaincy Service which offers spiritual care for all people affected by disasters in the New York tri-state area. I’m particularly proud of the fact that I founded a non-profit organization in 2008 – 4thU-Artivists (formerly 4thU-VDay). To date we’ve raised over $125,000 to raise awareness and funds to end violence against women and girls locally and through creative projects (theater and dance productions, concerts and art shows).
And in the work arena… I have a pretty eclectic professional background, starting with 13 years in the corporate world (the longest stint at TIAA-CREF), then as co-owner of a successful family-owned children’s music business (sold in 1997 after 11 years). Most recently, I’ve morphed into a ritual consultant and facilitator, Interfaith Minister, professional counseling astrologer, and of course, life and relationship coach.
I have a Master’s degree in Psychology (specializing in Transpersonal Counseling and Women’s Spirituality) from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. I am a graduate of Coach University, (the premier coach training program in the world) as well as a certified Relationship Coach through the Relationship Coaching Institute and have been awarded the Professional Certified Coach (PCC) designation from the International Coach Foundation (ICF). I’m also a nationally certified Counseling Astrologer and completed the two-year Counseling Training Program through The Astrology Institute in Lexington, MA. I lead monthly New Moon SisterCircles in New York City, as well as “virtual” Full Moon TeleMeditations with women from all over the globe.
I tend to attract a diverse group of clients, the common thread being a huge desire to move to the next level in all areas of their lives, honoring and deepening the mind/body/spirit connection as they make those shifts. I love the fact that all of my background and training fit so wonderfully under this umbrella called “coaching” and that all of my tools and techniques can stand alone, or be woven together in countless creative and powerful ways. As you explore the rest of this site, I think you’ll see what I mean!
*** Special note to my male friends & colleagues: please don’t be put off by the gyno-centric (women-oriented) aspects of some of my work. It’s where I’m drawn spiritually, probably because I grew up surrounded by major testosterone! My coaching practice is open to both men and women, as are some of my workshops, where the emphasis is always on honoring our masculine and feminine energies equally. Just pass the word along to like-minded folks and know that you’re welcome whenever it’s “mixed company”.
The following video is a few years old so the “current events” may be different, but it still captures my outlook on my life and work beautifully… and hopefully will give you a better understanding of who I am, as a Coach and a person. Enjoy!
