Creating Sanctuary Inside and Out on the Cancer/Capricorn Full Moon

Creating Sanctuary, inside and out

We’re in the deepest, darkest time of the year, at least in the Northern hemisphere. I know for some of you, that just feels completely oppressive and depressing. But for this Cancer crab (that’s my symbol in astrology), I have an easy excuse to retreat into my cozy shell and revel in what I call “sanctuary time”.

All those hibernating bears, groundhogs, and field mice definitely have the right idea. So why do we resist it??

Don’t get me wrong. I love summer and really, all the other seasons, but I also cherish the instinct to hunker down in my warm house and slow my pace. Granted, we’ve probably done WAY too much of that over the last 3 years or so, but rather than fight that impulse this time of year, I’m going to invite you to flow with it. Maybe use this time to create some new routines and spiritual practices, to intentionally create sacred space in your home.

One way to do that is to craft an altar with meaningful symbols — you can see the one in my office in the photo above. I sit next to it every day when I’m meditating and just the act of lighting a candle there shifts the energy in the room, whether I’m sitting next to it or typing on my computer. You’ll find lots of other ideas for consecrating your home in an article I wrote several years ago for Your Tango… and I’d love to hear yours, too.

And if you do that, you’ll be fully embracing the vibe of the Cancer/Capricorn Full Moon coming up on January 6th. Among other things, Cancer energy is about creating safety and comfort, honoring your home, and nurturing yourself and those you love. Integrate that with the grounded, disciplined, foundation-building Capricorn season we’re moving through from December 21st to January 20th and you’ve got the perfect combo for setting intentions for 2023!

[Just a heads up — if you’re in the metro-NYC area, we’ll be Setting Intentions for the New Year with Candle Magic at our Aquarius New Moon Circle on January 22nd — details in the sidebar below. Or you can do it virtually by tuning into the recording of my virtual Capricorn New Moon SisterCircle I facilitated through the Wellness Universe on December 22nd.]

My goddess-sister Barbara has been doing these visioning weekends for 20+ years with rave reviews, and while this one is virtual, I promise is just as powerful as her live ones have been. Through soul-searching exercises, deep ritual work, meditation, movement and a collective commitment to transformation, you’ll become clear about what you want to manifest in the New Year. Barbara tells us that 2023 is a Universal Year, representing a 7-year cycle when your mind, body, and spirit are renewed — are you ready for that?! Click on the link above for details.

***SPECIAL OFFER FOR the SPIRTED LIVING COMMUNITY: Barbara has agreed to extend her Early Bird discount until January 7th! Notify me if you want to go and I’ll put you in touch. Then get ready to bring out the best in yourself & those around you in 2023!

AWAKEN YOUR WILD SOUL WOMEN’S RETREAT w/ RENEE TRUDEAU Fri-Sun., 1/27-29 at Kripalu Center, Lenox, MA

And the following weekend, one of my other dear friends and magical facilitator Renee is back LIVE at Kripalu with the powerful, nurturing retreat she’s been leading for 20+ years. You can join women from their 20s to their 80’s in this new multidimensional retreat experience she’s created, focused on staying WILD: wild souls authentic movement, songcircles, deep sister connection and nature, nature nature. All of that, and Renee weaves in plenty of time to rest in stillness, meditation, Yoga Nidra, and to learn her favorite practices for peace and well-being. I’ll be there assisting and I’d LOVE to see you!

We’re sooo excited to be back LIVE for our Spring show on April 27-29! We’re curating an original production about the business of birthing in the U.S. Medical System today. We are in a maternal health crisis in the United States — our country has the highest rates of maternal mortality in the industrialized world, with Black women 3-4 times more likely to die of pregnancy and childbirth-related complications than white women. Our production will highlight original birth stories and true experiences with discrimination in the hospital system, featuring prominent voices from the reproductive justice movement. If you’re as enraged as we are about these statistics, PLEASE come audition and help us raise money and awareness.

Artist Bobbi Van and global life coach Amber Chand are leading this creative retreat for women aged 50+ to the magical city of San Miguel de Allende in the highlands of Mexico. I recently re-connected with Bobbi and loved hearing about this powerful journey where you’ll “learn how to skillfully move into the next chapter of your life using visionary tools, authentic storytelling and creative practices that will guide you.” Even if you can’t go, you should check out their website and read about these remarkable wise-women. And if you do go, i want to hear about it!

I stumbled on this Facebook page a few months ago and just had to share it here. It’s exactly what the title says — they post photos and explanatory descriptions of amazing women throughout history. They also focus on important issues and accomplished women in modern times as well. It’s fascinating to see images of women living “ordinary” lives in the past, as well as learning about those pioneers like Mary Walker who graduated medical school in 1855 when few women became doctors. Definitely check it out and prepare to be inspired!
