Lunar Love Magic For Every Month Of The Year

New Moon energy for lovers

Embracing Lunar Love Magic

Playing with New Moon Energy to deepen & enrich your relationships.

Gardeners know it makes the flowers bloom. Fishermen are well ‘schooled’ in its effect on their catches, and hospital delivery rooms gear up for the baby boom when it’s at its fullest! It’s no secret that the Moon has a powerful influence on our outer world in so many ways. And as many sensitive souls will tell you, it also can deeply affect our inner world as well.

Yes, I’m one of those sensitive souls, a Moon baby, born under the sign of Cancer which in astrology is ruled by the Moon. But I promise, it’s not just us Cancers who feel Her gentle (and sometimes not so gentle!) pull. Look at the powerful effect the Moon has on the tides… is it any wonder that, with our bodies made up of ~60% water (80% at birth), we humans are inexorably tied to her rhythms as well?

Full Moon and New Moon energies defined

If that idea resonates with you, then New and Full moons can be wonderful opportunities to focus, reflect and create, using the those “inner” energies of the lunation. On the New Moon, the Sun and Moon are dancing their closest in the sky, with the Earth wiggling in between them; the Moon seems to disappear as it moves into the shadow of our own planet. This phase corresponds to growth and all new beginnings… our vessels are empty, waiting to be refilled.

Full Moons occur when the Sun and Moon are opposite each other in the sky and the Moon is reflecting all of the Sun’s light.  We give birth to plans made and projects started since the New Moon, nurturing them to fulfillment and perfect realization. It is our time of greatest vitality and creativity.

I’ve been facilitating women’s Moon Circles since 1996 at my Unitarian Church in New York City.

I started out with Full Moon Circles, then brought in New Moon Circles a few years later, led both of them for several years, and have just been doing New Moon SisterCircles since 2007. I also lead 15-minute Full Moon TeleMeditations on the phone every month just cuz I’d miss honoring my Moon-sister in all her bright glory, too!

Of course, we women are cycling creatures ourselves (that’s a whole other conversation) and have been gathering in circles for millennia (ever read Anita Diamant’s The Red Tent? ), so that makes for really powerful gatherings right off the bat. Then, each month, we focus on a different theme, both in the TeleMeditations and in the “live” circles, coming together to celebrate our connection to the lunar cycles, to the Earth and to each other, through movement, song, personal sharing and magical play. It’s both a nurturing and empowering experience at the same time.

The special magic of New Moon energy

I admit, when I started playing with the idea of conjuring up Lunar Love Magic specifically to enhance our relationships, it was a tough call whether to focus on the Full Moon or New Moon. I mean, that big, beautiful orb is so obvious, and of course, there’s such wonderful, romantic mythology, songs and images built up around the Full Moon. Really, can you imagine snuggling up with your sweetie on the back porch and gazing up at… a bunch of stars? Nice, but not quite at maximum-strength romance level.

I have to say, though, as I’ve steeped myself in moon lore and lunar wisdom over the last 20 years, I’ve gained an equal appreciation for those moon-less nights, otherwise known as the “dark of the Moon”.  It’s that deep, dark time of the lunar cycle when we’re naturally drawn to go within, to focus on what we’re leaving behind and begin to plant seeds for the ideas, plans, and actions we want to grow over the coming weeks as the Moon itself waxes towards full again.

So, as a Relationship Coach, dedicated to supporting couples and singles to take concrete actions to attract and maintain fabulous relationships, it makes sense to harness the wisdom of that deep New Moon energy to set new intentions and declare our commitment to do some serious Love Magic in the weeks following the New Moon. Then we can celebrate what we’ve manifested on the Full Moon!

Each month over the next year I’ll be offering lunar lore, tips, rituals and ideas to jazz up or jump-start your love life.

Purely coincidentally (I love it when that happens), we’ll be launching it in sync with the Aries New Moon (this year on April 15th), the first sign of the zodiac and the first New Moon following the Spring Equinox, that ancient celebration of rebirth and new beginnings. How perfect is that?!

To get you started conjuring up your own magic, I’ve come up with the themes for each month, with the disclaimer that I reserve the right to change some of them if I’m so inspired (a year is a long time!) or if any of you pass along your own terrific ideas, too.The dates here show the full range of where the New Moon can fall each month and there are lots of wonderful Moon calendars out there to give you the exact days of both the New and Full Moons (one of my favorites of the We’Moon calendar):

I believe so passionately that you can use the powerful influence of the Moon to re-balance your life and relationships, re-energize your mind, body and spirit, and while you’re at it, to re-connect with the cycles of nature which is always so healing and energizing in itself.

If we really commit to embracing the ebb and flow of the Moon’s light as a metaphor for our own cycles of letting go, stillness, visioning, and full manifesting, we’re engaged in a pretty powerful, ongoing program of personal growth and self-discovery. And if you add in the meanings of the moon signs at each phase… well, that just brings it to a whole deeper level. I hope you’ll join me on the journey!
