Tips, rituals, and resources to IGNITE PASSION, Aries-style!
Welcome to the first stop – the New Moon in Aries — on this romantic, year-long journey around the zodiac! I’m so excited to weave together a whole bunch of my favorite topics – playing with New Moon magic, designing simple, meaningful rituals, and supporting couples and singles to create fabulous relationships.
Each month, we’ll focus on a different theme, picking up the unique energy of the New Moon that month and exploring how you can best use it to jazz up your love life. (You can see all the themes for the year and read about the origins of Lunar Love Magic in my “launch” article, Lunar Love Magic for Every Month of the Year.)
You’ll learn how to assemble your magical New Moon toolkit, set up your lunar love nest, and create playful activities and mini-rituals for each sign.
I’ll give you a few specific ideas, but hopefully once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to conjure up some on your own or with your sweetie!
As a refresher, the New Moon occurs when both the Sun and Moon are in the same sign, and this year the New Moon in Aries falls on April 15th… income tax day! Which is about as un-sexy a topic you could find. So let’s go right for Aries energy itself – enthusiastic, energetic, self-motivating, headstrong. The fiery Aries Moon brings passion to our emotions, knee-jerk reactions, courage in the face of challenges. It’s known as the “me first” sign, perfectly embodied in its astrological symbol, the Ram! Are you starting to get ideas for ways to lasso that those horns?
Out of that array of Aries characteristics, I settled on Igniting Passion as our theme this month, but I’ll always encourage you to come up with a theme that resonates for you and your particular relationship right now.
Assembling your magical Aries toolkit
The next step is to look at all the fun associations for Aries energy – here are some to get you started:
Elemental energy – fire
Colors – bright reds, scarlet, ruby
Gemstones (red) — bloodstone, garnet, ruby, red topaz
Flowers — tiger lily, red poppy, geraniums, red clover, narcissus (thought I’d throw that last one in there since it’s so perfect with that “me first” energy!)
Essential Oils – rejuvenating, refreshing – peppermint, cinnamon
Music – energizing, upbeat
Food/Drink – spicy, ginger-y
And if you really want to pack your toolkit to the brim, you could also research Aries movies, books, clothes, animals, places in nature… the list is endless, depending on what you and your partner are drawn to explore.
Setting up your New Moon in Aries love nest
Whenever I teach or speak about the power of ritual in our lives (the subject of my Masters thesis many years ago), I talk about the four basic elements that must be present to ensure that it’s truly transformative:
1) declare a clear intention – that’s our theme, Igniting Passion
2) activate all your senses – those associations in your toolkit will help here
3) use meaningful symbols – also in your toolkit
4) create sacred space and time – this is where we set up your love nest!
Whether you’re creating this special lunar love space for yourself or with a partner, be sure to follow a few basic ground rules: find a private space where you won’t be interrupted, turn off your phone (and any other nearby screens), and make sure you have all of your props and tools before you start… believe me, it’s definitely annoying to build that powerful New Moon energy then discover you have to run out and grab a missing component.
Your sacred love space could be anywhere, depending on what you plan to do there. If you want to create a private little ritual to draw in New Moon in Aries energy, it could be in your home office or a quiet corner. If you’ve enticed your partner to play with you, the bedroom is a perfect place, or even a theme-inspired trip. The idea is to create an environment that feels nurturing, safe, and inviting.
Conjuring up playful and/or powerful Aries activities
OK… now you can pull together all of the pieces and create a little Aries love magic!
But first, a caveat: don’t worry about doing it right on the date of the New Moon – you’ll get maximum New Moon energy for 3 days before and after, but the Sun is in Aries for a whole month, from March 20-April 19, so you can tap into it to a lesser degree during that period, too. Just remember, if you really want to work with the intention-setting, “planting seeds” energy of the New Moon itself, it’s best to do it on or after the actual date… in this case, April 15th. (You can review all of that information in the original “launch” article.)
The other thing to keep in mind is that if either you and/or partner are an Aries by birth, or if your moon is in Aries, you’ll get a nice double whammy of Aries New Moon energy whatever you decide to do!
Here are a few ideas to get you started…
Your own personal New Moon in Aries ritual to Ignite/Attract Passion
First, create your sacred space with some of the tools from your toolkit – light a red candle and place red flowers nearby. And in the spirit of activating your senses, burn some peppermint or cinnamon essential oil in your aromatherapy lamp, play some fiery, passionate music (maybe Stravinsky’s “Firebird Suite” or Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries“ or something more contemporary), and have some spice-y food or drink nearby (ginger beer or hot sausage?!) to tingle your taste buds.
Now that you’ve set your magical stage, what symbolic actions will you take to anchor your New Moon commitment to create more passion in your life? One of my favorites is to imbue a special object with those intentions – hold a piece of jewelry or stone (red of course) as you articulate what you want to manifest. More courage? Move your body in a sexy way? Take the initiative in love-making? Sit quietly and see what bubbles up (or in Aries fashion, what “flashes” of inspiration get sparked), writing it down if you think you’ll forget. Now you’ve got your own powerful Aries “passion-igniting amulet” to carry with you as a reminder to re-connect with your intention!
Your special Aries passion-igniting activity to create with your partner
This one may be a little more organic, depending on how on board your lover is with the whole New-Moon-ritual-magic idea. If they are, you can create your lunar love nest in all the ways described above, or can you be more subtle and maybe just have red flowers and candles on the table during a romantic dinner… during which you serve sexy, spice-y favorites, maybe topping it off with some peppermint schnapps and some after-dinner tango dancing!
Once you get to the bedroom, you can go to town – pole dancing? Sparklers? More red candles and fiery music? And if your partner is up for it, one of my favorite fire-magic activities is to create a magical candle together – lots of the couples I work with have had fun with this one.
Here’s the short version of how you create Candle Magic: you’ll need a 3″ or 6″ pillar (fat) candle and a pen or big nail. Sitting on your lush red bedspread (a nice towel will do), the two of you first share your ideas for spicing up your love life. What are the things you’d each like more of from the other? What qualities do you want to bring to your relationship… fun, adventure, honesty, patience, etc.
Then using the pen or nail, carve those intentions and requests into the candle. If you really want to take it to the next level, you can anoint it with yummy oils and even glitter! And every time you light the candle together, you’ll be re-igniting those commitments. (If you want the full-blown instructions to deepen the experience, just email me and I’m happy to send them.)
There are so many directions to go when you’re playing with New Moon energy.
It definitely takes some preparation – I always joke about the “schlep” factor involved when I’m carting all those things from my ritual toolbox to a workshop or New Moon circle! But creating symbolic actions with a clear intention in sacred space is a powerful addition to some of the more “traditional” goal-setting practices you might have. And frankly, it’s just more fun… can you see why I call it “sacred play”?
I hope you’ll join me next month when we explore Taurus New Moon energy to create more powerful lunar love magic. In the meantime, I’d love to hear what new insights and PASSION emerge from your New Moon in Aries magic – email me and give me the deets!
